A DURABLE INNOVATION FOR USE IN DEVELOPING REGIONS

The Turbo Stove represents a technical link between household energy-related problems and farm and community forestry.

The concept of sustainability is foremost. Because of its basic technical design, assembling and preparing mainteining the Turbo Stove on the local level is feasible.

The cooker belongs to the group of metallic, one-pot, chimney-free, portable and bioenergetic cookstoves.

It is efficiently fabricated from the stage of plain metal sheet to semi-finished assembly kit. The kit itself is a comprehensive unit consisting of only seven parts which are separated by hand for final assembly.

Turbo Stove generates excellent combustion based on an opimal combination of preheated primary and secondary air flow through the combustion chamber. The primary air flow can be regulated by the two-level adjustable grate as the preheated secondary air enters the combustion chamber through holes in the inside wall. The process is based on thermal expansion of air acting between the two walls.

Preheated secondary air is pressed into the combustion chamber by the combination of thermal air expansion between the walls and the drought of rising flames. There is no need for a chimney and gas emissions are very low and with less smoke. As a result the stove burns in all condition reliably, steadily, efficiently and economically.

An Invention which is:
- Globally unique
- Easy to assemble
- Economical in use
- Fulfils most user requirements

Suitable for:
- Frying
- Boiling
- Roasting

Tapio Niemi, Master of Forestry

The Inventor of Turbo Stove in the Sudan in Merowe pyramids '98 with. Mr Nour Eldin Sid Ahmed Khamza and his relatives. We could find houses of 1 000 years old made of burned bricks by firewood from forests. At that time there were Savanna type Forests of more than 100 species with Lions and Elephants. And a lot of labours to build pyramids and to sustain them much firewood was needed for cooking, as well. But the man goes ahead and the desert follows! When the tree coverage drops below 15 % of the overall landscape it means declining for the culture of the people, who are deepending from the environment. Since ever then we have had environmental refugees in a country, which is the largest in Africa.

"With the ever-increasing shrinkage of our planet's fuel supplies together with its continuous growing population and air pollution, efficient usage of fuel having low-emission levels is crusial for the world's entire populace and environment. Aside from the conservation standpoint, fuel efficiency is also important from an economic perspective, since there are large segments of the world's population which live in poverty."

The development of Turbo Stove took ten years. Tapio Niemi worked for Sudan- Finland Forestry Programme in the Sudan for 5 years and for Forestry Extension Project in Nakuru and Nyandarua Districts in Kenya for 5 years. Tapio Niemi gained experience in afforestation and nursery technics and forestry extension in semi-desert like conditions in the Sudano-Sahelian zone. Development of forestry extension service in Kenya comprised development of tarining materials, training, development tree nurseries and rainwater harvesting system in 80 primary schools and working with "Cooking to Conserve" programme.

Turbo Stove originated in response to local population needs: a well-functioning woodburning oven had not been available.
